I would like to apologize- [He stops, because he sounds sarcastic. It's like a natural reflex. He continues on more normally.] I would sincerely like to apologize to Hayley Stark for dosing her with a highly unpleasant fear toxin last July, according to the calendar that the Admiral has inflicted on us. It was unwarranted in her case.

[Added later: Crane sounds exasperated.] And in the case of anyone else who was affected at the time.

[Added even later: Crane's getting used to it.] Including people who were directly killed as a result of it, otherwise indirectly impacted or generally traumatized by the experience. At the time I clearly needed to work out who was deserving of what.

Apologizing. Highly overrated, if you ask me. Just saying 'sorry' never fixes anything.

Literally, what happened in July. It's not something that the people who were there have forgotten.

It's not a very pleasant story. But I suppose that you need to know.

I'd agreed to tell you something about myself in exchange. I'll keep that bargain.

The Joker brutally murdered Rose. At the time, I was unsure of who had done it. I'd only seen someone in a lab coat leaving the scene. So I did the logical thing. Attacking the barge as a whole. It was highly likely that the culprit would be hit by the toxin.

Understandable, if a bit careless. Would you do the same thing now, if it happened again?

Hardly. It was a rash thing today. I threw away months of work because I was angry. It's the most unprofessional thing I have ever done.

Then I see no reason to dwell on it, but I do think the apology's a good idea. Maybe again in future when you mean it.

Why didn't the apology work with Hayley?

I did say that it was only unwarranted, not that I regretted doing it. It wasn't dishonest, per say.

It appears that it might have, after some adjustments. She's not easily pleased.

Not quite, but you do flatter me.

Most people don't consider being called a conman a compliment.

Once you move past the dishonesty, it's a rather admirable profession. Much like your own. It's a greater dedication than most actors have and demands more skills. Plus I'd imagine anything illegal comes with more risks.

Most people don't think it through like that. It's almost enough to make me suspect that you've done something like it at some point in your life. If you did, you must have spent a large amount of time working out excuses to justify the behavior to yourself. [Crane loves an opportunity to shrink.]
