[42] - [Voice, so painfully public]
I would like to apologize- [He stops, because he sounds sarcastic. It's like a natural reflex. He continues on more normally.] I would sincerely like to apologize to Hayley Stark for dosing her with a highly unpleasant fear toxin last July, according to the calendar that the Admiral has inflicted on us. It was unwarranted in her case.
[Added later: Crane sounds exasperated.] And in the case of anyone else who was affected at the time.

[To the latter, she shrugged and dropped her eyes again.] "Franklin? He killed me before. I talked him into killing himself when he was totally vulnerable. I mean, I had to finish him off technically? But he did most of it."
[She swallowed, seeming uncomfortable with the memory. When she continued, her voice was quieter.] "He exploded. There was blood.. everywhere."

[Crane was slightly chilled to here about Hayley's success with Franklin, but also glad to hear that she had other targets apart from him.] Well, at least he had the right idea. Did you get caught or is this Franklin keeping quiet about what happened?
[Crane took a sip of his drink. The description of blood didn't phase him. Worse things could happen. The explosion was unusual, but he was prepared to wait to hear about how exactly that had come about.]

[To the question about getting caught, she shrugged uncomfortably and took a sip of her coffee.] "Honestly? I got a little freaked out by the blood. I called Capa to help me take care of it.. and he did. We got in a fight about it and he took away my filters for a little while, but.." [She shrugged.] "That was it. Franklin told him not to blame me."
[Her tone was slightly more sadistic and amused by the end. After all, she had effectively killed someone and gotten away with it and still had every part of her arsenal intact. She took another sip.] "Oh! That reminds me. I want another vial of the toxin, since you used the one I gave you not on yourself."

[Crane trailed off. He didn't particularly like talking about Dawsey. He didn't particularly like thinking about Dawsey. In any case, Hayley's story was far more interesting that the Dawsey situation. The fact that Capa had been prepared to take away a body had not been what Crane was expecting.] It sounds as if that whole situation resolved itself adequately, even if the actions of all the parties were surprising.
[Crane looked at Hayley at the mention of the toxin and frowned. He honestly didn't have any of it available and no way of making it in the foreseeable future.] I don't have any, Hayley. Not even for myself. They were confiscated.
