For reasons totally unrelated to the recent flood, I've recently turned my mind to the issue of barge romantic relationships. [Crane sounds awkward just saying it.] Frankly, I'm confused as to why anyone could ever think that it ever would work out. Ignoring numerous public examples of messy arguments between wardens and inmates alike, I've never in my experience heard of a prison being described as a good dating environment. While the inmates do obviously suffer a certain lack of options, it's the wardens that persist in romantic liaisons that surprise me.

How can your supposed relationships have real meaning if they have an expiration date date? Or would you be willing to give up your family, friends and universe for one person who seemed like a good option while you were in a prison? You can believe me when I say that it isn't only unrealistic, it's unhealthy. It's no more valuable than a relationship forged in a war zone, done by the same messy necessity and a certain need to settle for what is available, no matter how substandard. It's disturbing how easily you all seem to give in to the delusion that it means something. It doesn't. It just has that sliver more meaning than the rest of your pointless existence on the barge. Furthermore, it's a disservice to your inmates and not to mention a failure in your duties as wardens. You're not here to find meaningful relationships with each other. You're supposed to be helping us.

[Pause. Crane sounds slightly more amused.] I hadn't done this in a while. It's highly therapeutic for me to tell you all the ways that you're wrong. I recommend it highly to other inmates.

Primarily the limited options presented and the type of people that the barge attracts. There are very few people here that I would consider decent human beings.

It's not normally something within my realm of interest. But if the warden's aren't going to notice it themselves, I'm going to point it out.

It harms the wardens inmate. Our one-on-one system suggests that a warden primary responsibility, focus and energy should be dedicated to their inmate. The Admiral doesn't give people rewards for nothing. As soon as you bring a relationship into the question, the warden has other priorities that were never in their job description.

I know. It is terribly tragic. But it could be worse. I could be musing on everyone else's relationships in a desperate attempt to at least seem normal.

Good for you. But inmates can't leave. They don't get a choice about following you on your spirit quest or whatever you want to call the process of brainwashing someone until they can graduate. By anyone's standards, inmates are prisoners which therefore makes the wardens our guards. Have you ever thrown someone in zero? Because if you have, I think that proves my point. You can't be a guide if you hold that level of power over someone else.

That may be true, but it seems unreasonable to dismiss my concerns solely based on that. Once I posted a video of Perry Dawsey murdering Rex Lewis. That would probably be construed as "trolling". But no one ignored the content in that.

I didn't intend to follow through. Curiosity, maybe. I don't know if he'd realized that they were something that could be used against him on the barge.

Why are they so absurd? They're abuses of power that could actually occur on the barge.

I'm not sure we come in general groupings, you know.

I'm aware of that, and the idea of them isn't absurd - but I find them so when I know for a fact I'd never dream of either.

And you could say that about any job, but people manage to be married and hold down jobs all the time.

But now the thought's in my head, it's too late! You in the Dr. Phil chair. It's legitimately horrifying.

Not always, I would say. Having a child does not necessarily distract a wife from her husband or vice versa. Being in a relationship may not ever have an impact on a guard working in an actual prison, or a counselor. If it does, then it does, but that is the way of all life and relationships.

The way I see it, you either have your eye on someone, are jealous, failed that little test of ours, or are going to offer a reason I haven't thought of.

I might have been reacting poorly to a flood.

It's different when the person that you're in a relationship with is actually working alongside you. There are reasons why there are laws against that sort of thing in the real world.
