I have worked out the essential problem on the barge in regards to not only warden and inmate relations, but as a whole. [Dramatic pause. Be excited, people.] Lack of respect.
You see, the inmates don't respect the wardens. The wardens don't respect the inmates. The inmates don't respect each other. The wardens don't respect each other. So naturally, out little quasi-society is constantly on the edge of breakdown, simply due to the fact that we can't even establish a basic level of functioning. Given the class system that we live under, inmate to warden resentment is at least understandable, but the others? Well, the only rational explanation that I can find is a certain willingness for the majority of barge citizens to act without even basic lip service to the normal values of society.
A case study, perhaps? How about, let me think. [Pause of fake thinking.] Edward Nygma. A functional warden. Neurotic, but possibly generally regarded as acceptably eccentric. Likable, from a distance, if one were to think about such things. But with any social interaction that goes for an length of time? Complete social incompetence due to his rejection of the fact that other people may potentially be worthy of his attention. A superiority complex, some might say. [Sorry, Eddie. Crane's just fishing because his feelings are all hurt over that whole warden item incident.] [After talking with Slade, Crane's cut this out leaving a very obvious skipping in the audio of the post. Feel free to have your pup respond to it before Crane had taken it out, or otherwise comment on the very obvious missing chunk.]
Another, more relevant example relating to recent barge events. The reaction to the Samhain incident seems completely unwarranted. Frankly, I fail to understand how an inmate can be blamed for following her religious beliefs. They may not be acceptable by the standards of others, but isn't what happened understandable? Condemning it only shows a lack of flexibility in how the wardens manage the barge and a lack of respect for an inmates religion.
It's amusing to think that our problems could be eased by at least trying to act like normal human beings. But apparently that's too hard, isn't it barge?
