doctor_j_crane: Crane looking like he's arguing. (Let me explain)
[personal profile] doctor_j_crane
I'm not going to talk about what happened during the flood. Deal with it.

[Pause, before continuing on.] And you know what else? I'm done. I'm finished with this wider barge program. I officially do not care about what any other warden does except my own. Almost none of you deserve to be a warden. You victimize your inmates, you victimize other inmates. You victimize each other. Whatever the Admiral is offering you? You don't deserve it. You negated your right to receive it as soon as you stopped doing your job. I may be "crazy", as so many of you like to tell me to my face, but at least I know exactly what I am and what I've done. All of you might like to have a good long look in the mirror and then a good long look at your inmate. Because for most of you? There isn't much of a difference.

I'm not going to highlight who this doesn't apply to. You know who you are.

[Private - Eames]

Do you want a full detailed write up or a summary? Because I feel like that flood severely impaired my ability to coherently deal with people for a while there.

[Claire stopped her sitting dance but kept her eyes off Crane. No one had asked her that before. Regaining her composure, she played off his question nonchalantly.]

What do you mean?

[Crane noticed Claire's what he interpreted as Claire's sudden seriousness. Had he hit a nerve?]

Do you think the other wardens are good at what they do? [Crane asked after a pause.] Because I don't think, as a whole, that they are.

[She moved from one eye of his to the next, lips in a thin line as she contemplated how best to answer him. Did she opt for complete and total trust, truth? Or should she be more guarded and give pieces?]

As a whole? [Blinks.] No. Not all of them are...perfect choices. But they think what they're doing is the right way, so it's sometimes hard to argue, if they honestly see it as just.

[The blonde leaned forward to turn down the music slightly, the next song being a cover of the Pyramid Song.] Why are you asking?

I don't like them. [Crane said honestly, shaking his head. Furthermore, he didn't trust most of them.]

I don't see why moral relativity is allowed. [Crane paused. Frowned.] But there I go again, expecting some kind of consistency on the barge. Arkham may not have been the best place, but at least you could rely on it to be consistently bad.

No, I hear you. It'd be nice to know the same results come from certain actions, but...I dunno, when it is relatively consistent, people complain they're bored. They're no longer kept on their toes, unsure of what the Barge will toss us next. Does that make sense?

[Claire, though she would not show it, was pleased that Crane felt he could talk to her like this. She saw it as progress, assuming this was truth and the real Jonathan, not another façade. Needless to say, she was proud, regardless of the fact that he wasn't her assigned Inmate.]

It makes sense, but I would rather be bored. [Crane shrugs, and sits down. He spends a second looking frustrated. Thinking the issues through.]

What do they talk about in general? On the warden channels? [Crane asks after a second.]

[Blows air out of her nose gently.] Even before here, my life was never boring. Though I did try for the normalcy bit for a short while.

We talk about you. [She gives him a side-glance and cheeky smile. Last time she shared Warden filter information with an Inmate it bit her in the ass. Thanks, Iago. She's skeptical to share anything anymore.] Sorry, but, uh...I tried to be helpful before by sharing and it only got me grief.

[Crane smiles at the mention of the normalcy bit.] I tend to find that with certain people, normalcy never takes.

That's understandable. [Crane said in response to the second part of what Claire had said.] On the barge especially, chances are that the information will come back to haunt you sooner or later.

Yeah. Normal hasn't ever really been my forté. Ever.

But it's normally business. How to deal with the next fiasco, how the Admiral is a douche. Some of us really want to be here, Doctor Crane. Some of us, we really do want to help.

[Crane gives her a look, but keeps hi tone even.] Do you really feel like you're helping here?

[Claire rolls her shoulders, clasping her hands in between her legs.] Sometimes, yeah. I have one graduation under my belt, and I honestly feel like if Serena or Malcolm hadn't disappeared that they would have graduated too. I...I have to be doing something right...right?

[Crane stared at her for a second, looking more than a little bit shocked.] You graduated someone? Who? When?

[Wow. She wasn't sure how to take his reaction.] Bobby Bacala, like...two years ago. [Looked up at the ceiling, thinking.] Yeah, July of 2009.

[She looked back at him, shifting in her seat.]

Is it really that much of surprise?

I'm not surprised that you did it. [Crane said evenly. He really wasn't. He could see how Claire could graduate the right inmate.]

I'm just surprised that you're still here. Didn't your deal come through? [It was the only reason Crane could see for still being on the barge.]
From: [identity profile] some-kinda-hero.livejournal.com
[Claire flushed and looked away, fidgeting with her hands in her lap.] I...I never picked.

[She cleared her throat, spoke louder and faced Crane.] I just sort of forgot, and then I ended up going home again, anyway. It would have changed, whatever I would have picked before, I would definitely pick something else now. I'm no longer afraid to admit what I am and I think I would have chosen something selfish, like a normal life. But I have this ability for a reason and I want to keep it. Not everyone has decided what they want yet. Or, at least, that's what someone told me before.
