doctor_j_crane: Crane looking neutral. (In my crazy corner)
[personal profile] doctor_j_crane

[All said in a rather creepy monotone, with the occasional hissed emphasis.] Edward, I officially cannot take anymore of this. I know well enough what my own symptoms are and what they represent, but this is something else entirely. I was on the deck and something grabbed me. I fell, hard. It dragged me to the edge and I managed to break free, but I can see the scratches from where it was gripping me. And where it wasn’t. They’re all down my back, my arms.

The footsteps followed me back down to my room. I could hear things, see things in the corridors. People being killed. I went down to Rose’s old room, and if you stand out on the corridor and wait, you can hear what the Joker did to her. You can hear her screaming and him laughing. It goes for as long as you care to wait. I can see myself dying in my own room too, from after Iago stabbed me. Despite what the Admiral’s selling, it’s not cathartic to watch. If anything, it feels like a warning.

All of this isn’t helping. Whatever is here, whatever if taking on the barge, it’s back with a vengeance. I want no part of it. I’m going to need your help, though. I’ve got quite a good plan. I think I’m going to attack Rex, which should almost definitely prompt Iago into killing me again. Which means that I’ll be relatively in the right and we can be repaired, but I’ll also be very much dead. I need you to make sure that he doesn’t bring me back before this is over. Because he probably would.

[There's a long, tense silence as Eddie considers how to best deal with Jonathan's imminent (or current) breakdown.]

I'm in cabin twelve, level two. Bring toiletries and clothes.

[Beat.]

Do you need an escort?

[The longest pause. This is not how Crane expected the conversation to go.]

No, and no. I know what you're trying to do and it isn't respecting the integrity of my plan.

Your plan is both destined to fail and bound to produce much regret in the near future if you try. Can you imagine being locked in zero during a time like this?

Now, pack clothes and toiletries. A weeks worth should do.

My plan is bound to be successful and not end up with me in zero. I only asked you to assist in a small detail, not to offer criticism.

For what, exactly? There's no way that changing the scenery is going to make this go away.

A) You attack Rex, Iago kills you, I neglect to participate and you're returned to the barge to spend the remainder of October trapped in the infirmary.

B) You attack Rex, Iago kills you, I participate and face warden-wide scrutiny. You're returned to the barge to spend the remainder of October trapped in the infirmary.

C) You attack Rex, Iago doesn't kill you, but places you in zero. You spend the remainder of October being tormented by the Joker.

My company will make this more tolerable.

You neglected the scenario where my plan succeeds. And is also dependent on you giving me my knife back.

D) You attack Rex, Iago kills you, the cow jumps over the moon, the little dog laughs to see such sport, and you fail.

I'm definitely not giving it to you now.

Clothes, toiletries, don't make me say it again.

You're input is so helpful.

What happens if you need to say it again?

That's not encouraging. But I'd be willing to discuss the situation further with you in person. [Crane theorizes that Eddie will be easier to convince in person.]

You know the required items to enter the cabin. I'll leave the door open.

[Eddie decided to set up a bed in the lounge room, using an extra quilt from his own cabin. It's not them most comfortable place to sleep, but he won't have Jonathan attempting assault if he can help it.]

[And here's Crane, rocking up with... nothing. Except a disheveled appearance and the occasional facial tic. It's been one of those days. He also doesn't knock. Things are getting out of control.]

I really hope you were saying all of that over the journals for the benefit of the official record.

[Eddie ushered him inside with a quick glance out either side of the hallway, to make sure there was nothing at Jon's heels.]

Dismiss those hopes before I dismiss them for you.

[He closed the door behind him.]

Take the couch. I've set it up for the night.

[Crane immediately looks around when Eddie does. Ah, paranoia. But there's nothing there as far as he can see. For now.]

You don't understand. [Crane said, frowning.] You've ended up thinking inside the box.

I'm thinking inside a realm of intelligence you've apparently abandoned.

[Eddied crossed his arms at him.]

This isn't a good idea, Jonathan. We don't even know what the Admiral will do to the deceased.

My solution is logical.

[Crane looks like he's about to start gearing up for a loud argument, but abruptly changes tact.]

Fine, you don't have to help me. You just need to give me back the knife.

[He looked at Jon's eyes closely, and then his hands. The little twitches were noticeable.]

The knife is to be used in self-defense only. As you've revealed terms that break our agreement, you won't be getting it back.

[Eddie stepped back to lead him towards the furniture.]

Don't be the one to initiate violence during these trying times, Jonathan.

It's long term self defense. Against Iago. You have to see the logic in that.

[Crane steps forward when Eddie steps back, but mainly in an attempt to convince him.]

It's violence, but it's for a good cause.

This is a terrible, terrible idea, made out of desperation. I see no logic in hoping Iago's mental state in regards to you is precarious enough to cause your death, and the idea that death will halt your anguish instead of encourage it is preposterous.

[He lowered himself to the couch.]

You're not thinking clearly right now.

[It took Crane a few seconds to reply. Eddie was making far too much sense.] I'm not anguished. I may be a lot of things, but not that.

[After another brief pause, he went and sat next to Eddie on the couch, if a healthy distance away.]

Do you think it's an effect of the flood?
