doctor_j_crane: Crane looking neutral. (Sure/Conern)

For once, I want to hear the opinions of all of you. Wardens, inmates. I don't particularly care which. What do you consider necessary for graduation? Where's the bar that your inmate has to reach? That you think you have to reach as an inmate?

While I've spent most of my life dealing in moral ambiguity, the spectacularly difficult task of identifying just what makes graduating possible is beyond me. It seems to be like some variety of mirage, which you spend all your time following in the hope that one day someone will declare you standing in the middle of it. It's an impossibly frustrating target.

This isn't a criticism of you. I just want to know what they think.

But change to what, exactly? How is it even possible to judge something so relative like that?

That's dependent on the Inmate. I know exactly what it is about my Inmate that needs to change in order for him to graduate, and he knows what it is too.

So it's actually not relative at all. The reason you're here and what you have to do to get out of here should be listed in your file, which your Warden gets.

I've read my file. It doesn't have any kind of shopping list of what I need to change to get out of here.

Well, I guess it's up to you and a Warden to figure out then. Could be you have to change everything, I dunno.

You do realized that you just implied that everything about me needs changing, don't you?

It's possible. Of course, I don't have your file so I couldn't say for sure.

[No, he still hasn't quite forgiven you for trolling him about being a superhero.]

I think the fact that you're so judgmental is more of a reflection on you than it is on me.

Hey, don't start projecting your bad habits on me just cause I said what might be the case.

I'm not projecting. I'm saying how things are. There's a difference.

Saying how you want them to be. I don't waste time with trying to judge people here. You wanna gripe about that, do it to the Admiral.

He's the one who decided you should be an Inmate, not me.

No one has ever talked their way off the barge. The Admiral barely keeps up conversations with inmates. Is it different for the wardens?

No, he doesn't ever talk to us aside from his announcements about his shitty driving.

I'm just saying, you're complaining about being judged to me isn't going to get you anywhere since I'm not the one who did the judging.

I'm unsurprised about that.

You're part of the system though. Hypothetically, if I were your inmate, what exactly would you be asking of me?

Well, I'd have to get a look at your file before even knowing where to start.

What got you sent here in the first place?

Well, that's never going to happen.

Haven't you heard? I thought that most people had.

Figured as much.

I'd heard it spoken of, but no one ever said what it was exactly.

Fear toxin, using it on people. The effects are rather extreme.

So, you tortured people. Or was this more of a mass terror attack kind of thing? [Cause that's what crazy villians do where he's from.]

[Well, any guilt over wanting to punch Crane has all but evaporated.]

Yeeaaah, I'm gonna just go out on a limb here and say that the fact you thought doing that was a good idea has at least something to do with why you're here.

It seemed like a good idea at the time. Once I had refined the formula, it had the potential to change the world.

But apparently most people disagree with my methods. Which I suppose is understandable.

Maybe I'm just not all that creative, but I'm not seeing how something that causes people fear can change the world....at least not in a good way.

And, really? You suppose it's understandable? If you wanted human test subjects so badly, why not just use yourself?

Everything that happens in the world is based on fear. Violence, especially. If you can control fear, you have the power to drastically alter people's behavior.

Because it's impossible to measure the effects efficiently on myself, as the toxin would compromise my judgment.

That's a pretty skewed way of looking at things, isn't it? Fear's hardly the lone factor in the decisions we make. The same can be said of just about any emotion. Love, anger, hate...hell, Freud pretty much said the same thing about sex way back in the day.

And if you don't know who Freud is, just take my word for it, he's a guy from my world.

Except the fundamental difference is that all those things are rooted in fear, whether it's at an instinctual level or occurring as part of our higher functioning.

I know who Freud is. Obviously.
