doctor_j_crane: Crane looking neutral. (I See)

I’m out of zero, since the warden administration decided to get their act together. [Eye roll, Crane’s obviously not impressed with the time he spent down there.]

Unsurprisingly, nothing has changed. Good job though, with getting rid of the fear gas mess so far. The dining hall is looking quite pleasant. You could almost eat your lunch there without thinking about someone getting murdered where your chair is. [Crane just smiles at the camera for a long moment, before flicking it off.]

[Private – Irene Adler]

I don’t suppose you know anything about this? [Crane holds up a wad of paper which appears to be a file on Irene, with a kiss in lipstick on the top. He’s put it in a plastic sleeve to avoid touching the icky lady germs.]

[Private – Ms Rose]

I’m out of zero, finally, but you’re not in the infirmary. Where are you?

They do seem to bring little benefit. You may be right.

[Crane catches the waver, and forces himself to bring it up. Sort of. Despite the awkwardness.] Are you quite sure that you're fine?

[She took a drink of her cider and straightened up a bit, trying to seem less...intimidated.]

I suppose there is still a part of me that is...not comfortable with being here by myself.

It's perfectly understandable. [Crane felt decidely awkward. He'd never been good at comforting people.] It will probably fade, in time.

[She looked away, starting to weave her web.]

I'm sure the feeling will fade, but the threat will always be there, will it not? As long as he is on this ship.

There isn't a great deal we can do about him. Death doesn't seem to have the same significance here. [Uncomfortable Crane is uncomfortable.]

There must be some kind of way to lessen the threat... [Crane trails of, thinking.]

Oh? [She sat up a bit straighter, looking quite interested in whatever plan he might come up with. After all, she didn't want to suggest anything, so she was trying to make him.]

What would you have in mind?

[Crane feels bad that she looks so eager. He's still doing a rapid brainstorm.]

I suppose that he's less likely to attack more than one person. [Crane knew he was. There was nothing as bad as being outnumbered.]

[She refrained from smirking at that, as he was going right down the path of thinking that she had wanted him to. Sitting back, enjoying another slow drink of her cider, she shrugged.]

And if he does, there are better odds that he won't succeed.

It's true. There's better odds that he won't even try, which is the primary goal after all. [Crane took a long sip of his cider. The Joker was one of those topics that encouraged drinking.]

[The schoolteacher gave a soft sort of laugh.]

Exactly. But there aren't many who would be willing to do that. To stick by a stranger, just on a hunch.

No, I suppose there isn't. [Crane took another long sip of the cider.] It's the wardens job, in a way, but they're hardly going to do it well. Although my previous warden did, before she left.

[Rose looked unimpressed.] Then she didn't do her job well. If she had, she would still be around.

And it doesn't matter if it is the wardens' job. I have no warden.

She disappeared without warning. [Crane sounds snippy about this.] It wasn't somthing that she could help.

[He gets it together.] What do you intend to do?

[His attachment to his previous warden was something of a puzzle to Rose, who hadn't found anything useful in either of her wardens. But, he was just as entitled to being sucked into this fantasy as anyone else.]

I don't know. I would rather not be attacked again. By anyone. Your clown is not the only danger here.

What do you suggest I do? [Crane didn't have a great many ideas. Petitioning the Admiral was useless, the wardens were untrustworthy and he was unlikely to be able to ward off an attack from the majority of the inmates on the barge.]

We can only react to what we have. I would feel better having someone else around. At least until I obtain a warden who can, if possible, take other measures. [She looked away then, thinking. She knew that wardens had to ask for their inmates back...though Howie had to be the one to do it last time. That was not a situation she wanted to enter into again.]

We could always do what we were doing... before. [It's pretty obvious by Crane's low tone that he's talking about Rose dying.] It is better than nothing, until you get a warden with a hint of competance.

[She nodded.] I think that is a sound idea, as long as you are up for the task. I would hate to be a burden. [Lie...]

It's not a burden by any means. [Crane wasn't a big fan of being in close contact with people, but if it was a choice between that and having Rose die again he knew where he stood.] It's simply the practicable solution.

[Rose gave him a gentle laugh and shook her head.] Of course. Though will your warden approve of such an arrangement? [Pouring herself a bit more cider, she sat back to watch his expression on that.]

[Rose's laugh put Crane a bit more at ease.] I doubt that she will. If she does, it will probably be in the name of 'learning to care about people' or something equally ridiculous.

Strange how they think we do not care. Or that we cannot care, simply because we hold no love for them.

They assume that how we act towards them is how we act towards everyone else. [If there was one thing Crane hated, it was people in positions of authority over him. He knew that it tended to show. He looked down at his cider.]

This is rather strong, isn't it?

I'm not nervous. [Crane swirled his cider around in the cup.] I've just never been particularly partial to alcohol.
